VIO 32 From GRE NOOK
Posted By: Kerrowdown, 07-05-2020, 02:29 AM

One of the last remaining Scottish Clyde Puffers... it's actually Vic 32 from Greenock, but that's not what it says in this image.

This is a wonderful photo, KD. What's a Clyde Puffer?

Clyde Puffers, per Wikipeida, built between 1856-1939. It's an antique.

The Clyde puffer is a type of small coal-fired and single-masted cargo ship. A traditional coastal trading boat that was once found on the sea around the West coast of Scotland.

It has a flat bottom to allow it to be beached on Islands with not quay. The boat would then be unloaded at low tide, for which the whole Island turned out and then re-floated at high tide. The crew of four would live on board, due these voyages.

Puffer operations became uneconomic in the 1960's although the last boat operated commercially into the 1980's.

Provided a vital supply link around the West coast and Hebrides of Scotland.
