Wool Carder Bee

Female gathering nest material. I had never even heard of these bees.

Excellent capture! It's amazing how many smaller bee species there are if we care to look.

Thanks Charlie. After putting in a "butterfly" garden last year I was a bit surprised at how many different insects have used it for one resource or another.

Not having known of this species, I did some online research to learn more, and looked at many images. Interesting!

I think that your picture is among the best that I've seen online, including 'academic' entomological references. It's a great documentation of the bee's profile and characteristic habit, and the image quality is superb. Exposure, focus, and composition are all spot-on.

Thank you all. I appreciate your comments. And a double thanks to Craig. I'd noticed this bee flying into the interior of the this Rose Campion. Ignoring the flowers. I looked inside and saw this bee scraping its mandibles up and down scraping the "silk" off the stem into a ball underneath her. After 5 or 6 attempts I got a shot I was happy with. Then went inside and spent about 15 minutes online trying to find out what kind of bee this was. I'd never seen this activity before.
