Hummingbird in Flower Bed
Lens: Sigma 150-500 DG OS for Pentax Camera: Pentax K-5 IIS Photo Location: Paul Smiths, NY ISO: 200 Shutter Speed: 1/60s Aperture: F14

This is a shot I took of a hummingbird in a flower bed in the woods. I brought my AD600 and used a dark frame for most of the shots. The AD600 was giving me near 1/1000 flash duration at about 1/4 power or so. This way I was able to get the 200 ISO for the image.

Have a great day!

Thanks hjoseph7. What I was referring to is my Godox AD600BM monolight, which is a 600 watt light (adjustable power) that uses a battery instead of being plug in, so you can carry it around and use it. It weighs about 4-5 pounds, so I only carry it if it fits the situation. Otherwise, I also have Godox AD200s and Godox V1s that I can use for more portable light.

In this case, I brought the AD600, my remote control to control it from my camera, and a light stand for the AD600. I set the light on the stand next to the flower bed and waited for the hummingbirds to come. When the came into a good range of the light I took shots of them. What I meant by dark frame is that I set my camera so that without the flash the scene would be dark, but when the flash fired it would light the scene appropriately. That way I had control of most of the light that would appear in the scene.

Thanks for the nice compliment. I appreciate your opinion.

Thanks ToddK. That is what I was looking for. It was the first time I had done that using the light and it seemed to work out nicely. I got quite a few good shots on the outing.

Thanks again for the compliment. I appreciate your opinion.

Amazaing shot! Beautiful. That Sigma 150-500 has done its work well - pin sharp.

Thanks for the interesting info on the lighting technique, too.

I appreciate that. The lighting allowed me to use a good F stop to get a deep enough field of view and still retain a reasonable ISO.

I am glad you found the lighting information interesting.

The Sigma 150-500 still allows me to get the distance I need with a flexible range. If I use an appropriate F stop I usually get nice detail.

Thank you so much for the well received compliment.
