He was feeding on the grass seeds at the end of the frond. This was taken with the HDDA 55-300 PLM with the HDDA 1.4x TC.

Nice shot Rob. A little humor rarely hurts a photograph. This one definitely makes me smile. Terrific looking bird, background and composition also a plus.

Thanks! I liked this pose the most of several shots.

Thanks! I wish I could get more photos of Diamond Firetails with my current gear. I got a photo of one years ago but the lens and camera I had then weren't nearly as good. I tried to see Gouldian Finches in the Northern Territory but had no luck. I was there in summer and I suspect that Spring is the best time when they are feeding on grass seeds like this one. It looks like Spring is early this year. I photographed a Lapwing today which has three eggs it is incubating.

I'll try to get more photos of birds on the weekend!

Very nice. The red brows almost look like they are painted on. It would be hard to get a better "type" shot. It is a great composition too.

The red brows look shiny, like an extension of the beak. Now that you mention it, the pose reminds me of the 19th century watercolour style used by Gould and other artists of that era. Thanks!

I wondered if the (older) 1.4 tel-converters would operate the aperture on this new 55-300. Now I'll have to dig out my 1.4!

I have seen and taken (very bad) photos of this little guy twice. This is a beauty, Rob.

I have tried a friend's older Pentax TC with manual lenses, but not the PLM.

Thank you! I wish I'd had the DFA at the time, but the combination of the PLM and TC worked pretty well.

Just checked again, on a sunny winters day at noon, the Tamron + PLM on the K3 just won't focus at anything over 200mm. That more than negates the 1.4x

Ouch. Well, I can say that the Pentax HDDA TC and HDDA 55-300 PLM on the K3 works quite well until sunset. I took a few photos after sunset yesterday and focus was a struggle. In bright daylight the combination is pretty good, moreso at f10 than f9.5 (the latter being wide open at 300mm.
