The 747 lives on - for now

Qantas has leased a number of 747 freighters from Polar Air Cargo and is using them to move the freight which would normally be carried by regular passenger flights.

She's still a beauty to behold, soaring through the skies. Excellent capture as the composition certainly speaks for the skills behind the camera. Thnx a million for posting. :

Thanks Tony! Normally a jet passing by at cruise altitude wouldn't attract my attention except that there's relatively few planes flying at the moment, and this one had four engines. I wish I had checked the radar at the time to find out what altitude it was at, but probably around 32,000 ft.

If that were true, I don't think you could grab this shot with a 300mm lens unless you were standing on top of Mount Everest! Great shot of an iconic, historically significant aircraft. Thanks for posting.

Thanks! Jets usually cruise over Canberra above 28,000 feet. Years ago they often flew at 41,000 feet but these days the altitudes are lower. Did I mention that this image is a tight crop?

FWIW there's a UPS 747 flying north out of Sydney at 38,000 feet right now.

Here's the full frame of my image of the Polar 747F showing the vignetting even though it was f8.

That's cool! Are you able to get a photo? I'd love to visit Sydney to see them operating out of Kingsford Smith Airport, but Sydney has a covid outbreak at the moment.
