Digital Infrared images
Posted By: fwwidall, 08-08-2020, 11:07 AM

Just for a change I thought I'd take my infrared cameras out.

I have a istDL2 which has had the uv/ir cut filter replaced with a 720nm filter. It works well for false colour images, as well as B&W.

Here are some examples.

I also have a Sigma SD14 which can easily be converted to full spectrum by removing the uv/ir cut filter, which pops out very easily. I came across some articles which described how to simulate the old Kodak Aerochrome IR look by using a Hoya G(X1) filter so I had to give it a try.

What do you think of this look ? Its certainly different.

Hi Fred,

Very impressive. I have a K-m that I have had converted to infared. I will just have to get it out more often.

Regards,
Gordon.

Astonishing. How do you get such vibrant reds? I have a Sony A100 that is converted, I think its to 720nm (I bought it converted). There are loads of tutorials on getting the best results from filters, but not from a converted camera. I will be picking your brains, be warned

Here are a few of mine, first from today. I haven't had them in PS yet, just light room

With the SD14 set to a 'fluorescent' WB, and a G(X1) filter on the lens the images are pretty close to that straight out of the camera. Just some minor tweaking in PS to get it the way I like. I'll attach an unprocessed image (converted from Sigma's X3F format to JPG). If you google for 'G(X1)' and 'aerochrome' you'll find discussions on the technique.

Some nice IR images you have there.

I'm no expert by any means, but ask away......

Did you check out my IR album on Flickr ? Lots of examples of the different looks you can come up with. I find shooting IR fun as I never really know how the image will turn out until I start processing it.

Many of mine were too monochrome to get much but I managed to squeeze some colour out of this one. I will have a look at G(x1) and aerochrome, thanks maybe its time to start a PF IR group
