Just over 4 weeks ago I commissioned a garden to be created in my otherwise totally bare back yard. It is already beginning to offer me some photo opportunities.

No, not another bee. See those stubby antennae? Those are the hallmark of flies. This looks like some kind of drone fly or hoverfly. Nice shot anyway!

I would have sworn, from its body colours, that this HAD to BE a Bee. So googled. Best I can tell, it IS a variety of FLY - called a Beefly!!!

I learn more about nature by posting my pictures. Either my curiosity or someone else’s will get me ID.

Wings are the key for most flyers, get those and the other keys confirm antenna, eyes......
