Water droplets...
Posted By: Marc Langille, 11-07-2008, 08:12 PM

On birds...

I think these images demonstrate the unique water repellent properties of water bird feathers - the droplets on their feathers are almost jewel-like in appearance.

Drake Mallard:

EXIF:
Camera PENTAX Corporation PENTAX K10D
Exposure Time 0.0006s (1/1600)
Aperture f/6.3
ISO 320
Focal Length 430mm (645mm 35mm)
Photo Dimensions 3562 x 1884

Drake Green Winged Teal:

OK, I sneaked in a "dry" bird - please forgive me..

EXIF:Camera PENTAX Corporation PENTAX K10D
Exposure Time 0.0008s (1/1250)
Aperture f/6.3
ISO 320
Focal Length 600mm (900mm 35mm)
Photo Dimensions 2594 x 1420

A very pretty lady - female Mallard:

EXIF:
Camera PENTAX Corporation PENTAX K10D
Exposure Time 0.001s (1/1000)
Aperture f/6.3
ISO 320
Focal Length 520mm (780mm 35mm)
Photo Dimensions 3393 x 1775

I hope you enjoy these images! It looks like some (or perhaps many) of my images will be submitted to (and used by) the Cornell Lab of Ornithology...

Great shots Marc, I really like the OOF water effect in front and behind.

Such a clarity to the images. The individual droplets are so sharp in the pictures

Thank you Gary! It's quite unique isn't it?

Thank you James, and I am sorry to disappoint you on that one... I just found another image in which the clarity almost defies description... I totally forgot about it, so I am looking for a few more images to put together in another post...

Regards,
Marc

Thank you Jimbo and it is the 250-600...

Here is a crop of the third image:

I am serious when I say "stay tuned for more"... as indicated in my reply above to James, that third image is only a teaser for the next post. I am frankly stunned by the image clarity of the image I am looking at in CS3 after doing a simple sharpening. It's embarrassing that I forgot about it...

Wow excellent shots. I agree with Gary on the OOF. So sharp for such a thin DOF. That lens seems to be a winner.

The man , the lens, the camera , the shot - not sure which is best but combined they produce some of the best birding , widlife images I have seen. It's like watching Planet Earth in HD. Well done Marc.

Thanks impete82! It was a real treat using that lens, and I really didn't have much time to truly take it for a test run.

Thank you Peter - they (OOF areas) are similar to the FA* 200/4 Macro shots I've seen of the rippled area on a glass table... quite unique. It's a real champ across the board, regardless of focal length.

Wow Dave, now that is humbling...

To be honest, I looked at a couple of those crops and thought "geez, this is almost like close up on a HD TV or the window is right beside the subject". Now that is too funny how we thought of the same analogy!... Stay tuned for future opportunities for next year!

Marc

You do this stuff so well, Marc. Every time I shoot wildlife, it's hard to tell if the animal IS an animal!

Really enjoyed this series.

It's OK Jer... often I don't even recognize myself...

Seriously, it takes a LOT of patience and practice to succeed. Unfortunately the subjects don't always comply! I am glad you enjoyed them and I enjoy sharing the beauty of nature with folks.

Regards,
Marc
