El Malpais, along Interstate-40 in Grants, New Mexico. Pentax K1 + DFA 28-105 mm.

The Spanish conquistadors found no use for this lava covered part of Northwestern New Mexico. Agriculture or cattle raising was impossible so they called the region "El Malpais", the "good for nothing country".

Excellent work Richard,

It's a wasteland, it doesn't presage good things, however the task of a photographer is to document how the first pioneers.

Ciao Mario

What a wonderful landscape! The Spaniards were wrong, it was a great place for the locals to flee into... Today, it preserves a large, diverse ecosystem. And the lava makes for lovely scenery, of course. (The geologist in me speaking)

The lava expanse on both sides of Interstate-40 is surprising (as far as the eye can see). This crust of lava is thick and quite hard. Plants are beginning to "colonize" it in some places but it's true it's not very useful for agricultural purposes.

Regards

Nice shot! Thanks for sharing. I used to live in New Mexico. I miss being able to go out for the day and not see anyone!
