A nice, natural shot. The lighting and composition work well (it's the kind of skill that doesn't come naturally to me).

Thanks, but you can just replicate it, PJ1! Somebody has aways done it before, so it can happen again.

Note that there's no space above the head. You can just come in a little closer and get an intimate feel with the viewer, instead of isolating the subject in the environment.

I like how you have just enough illumination on the right side of the photo to mellow the darkness of shadows from the strong light on the left side, to give it the look of natural light. Did you use reflectors or fill-in lighting?

So, it's a big old fashioned round theatre light on the left side, and enough comes back from the white wall on the right to give a little fill.

I have no background in art/sketching, but my mother has quite a few books on the topic that I've looked at from time to time. This reminds me of some of the sketches and certain styles of doing portraits. I'm always impressed when an art technique/style can be captured using a camera

Yeah, so be guided by that, MSL. Be an art director first - get the look in your head - then get the necessary materials together and execute it. Unless someone's doing candid photography, it's the only way, right?

For most that is far easier said than done. And I'll probably always be one to admire others work rather than try myself for this sort of photography.

What else do we do this hobby for, MSL? I think you'll find it satisfying to plan a visual - it can be a still life - and execute it.

When you're just reacting ... walking, seeing something by chance and taking a snap ... it's just not as rewarding.
