Storm over St Monans zigzagging pier
Posted By: The Madshutter, 11-04-2020, 09:46 AM

Not being an engineer, I am not sure how effective the bizarre shape of St Monans' pier is to break waves, but I assume it works. What I am sure of, on the other hand, is that photographically speaking the pier is a truly inspiring work of concrete! 2 seconds, Hasselblad X1D II, Hasselblad 30mm and Formatt-Hitech Firecrest Ultra filters.

A smooth shape could cause waves to simply bounce along the wall, and possibly magnify. The sharp points break up the waves and the pocket areas can suck out energy by creating dead zones where the water mostly circulates. Of course this is partly guesswork on my part as there may be other reasons these specific shapes were chosen.

Beautifully done, Vieri! Also I like the "ray of hope" cutting through the dark skies - something we all need right now!

Your images are never a matter of random fortune .
Thank you very much for your comment, much appreciated While fortune can help, if one would rely on fortune alone to do this job, one would be sorely disappointed - I'd much rather do my best to help my fortune instead! As they say, the more one work at something, the luckier one becomes

Thank you very much for that, I figured there must be reasons for the bizarre shapes - luckily for us, the result is also extremely inspiring, photographically speaking

Love the misty image. Presumably the angles use the energy of the waves against themselves by reflection? In Japan they make breakwaters from tetrapods which end up breaking the wave force in many directions.

A fine image of an equally fine Scottish coastal anomaly.
