Great image. With the lighting it took me a moment to realise what it was.

Wonderful back-light. If you could describe how you achieved this image it would be helpful. Was it planned or did you just come upon it?

Great picture, is this kind of spider poisonous and considered common?

Thank you. It helps that the banding on the legs is translucent although that makes getting a proper exposure difficult.

Thank you Dave. I revisited the location where a bunch of these spiders were several times and took many photographs. It is an old boathouse on a pond not too far from my house. I learned to time my visits to late evening just before the sun set over the hill behind. The background is all in shadow which allows it to remain dark. I had to reduce EV two full stops to keep the highlights from burning out which meant I had to do some dodging and shadow lifting in pp to expose the body of the spider.
The bonus is I can bring my dog there off leash and she plays in the pond while I'm shooting. It was a fun process and I can't wait to return next year.

Thank you! We have no native poisonous spiders in Maine. This is a variety of Orb Weaver and they are quite common.

While I don't mind spiders too much, I often tell them to hurry and hide before my wife spots them and I'm forced to eradicate them, but with that lighting, it just looks slightly terrifying for some reason.

Unusual but very interesting, the detail and the colours make for a very interesting image. Well done
