I was eating outside at the local McDonald's, next to the Dept of Agriculture office, in Gallup, N.M. when this train came by.

These desert locomotives have their roofs composed entirely of huge blowing fans to cool the engine compartment. The sound of these V16 diesel engines is a music to the ear. Impressive machinery, indeed !

Regards

The last time I was in Gallup was four years ago when my train stopped there, but that was night time. We stopped there by car nearly twenty years ago - I guess the area has changed a lot since then.

The same locomotives are used all over the BNSF territory - from LA to Chicago. They even lease them out to the Norfolk Southern, and we see them here on routes here East of Chicago. Some of the ventilation is directly attached to the engines to provide direct cooling to the engines themselves. They are very powerful beasts.

Some of us never outgrow the train thing, I haven't. Nice shot.

Believe it or not, in the West I saw a "loooooong" BNSF train riding in two States at the same time ... lol ! (Arizona and New Mexico near the stateline of course).
