I know this lens doesn't get a lot of love around here, but for APS-sized sensors, It's the best lens I've used.
SMC Pentax-DA* 16-50mm F2.8 ED AL [IF] SDM Reviews - DA Zoom Lenses - Pentax Lens Reviews & Lens Database
Maybe there's no pixie dust, maybe it's big and heavy for a walk around zoom.
But the focal length range is spectacularly useful, the f2.8 is handy, its ergonomics are good, and it is weather resistant.
And, of course, it's plenty sharp, with good color and contrast.
Mine back-focused on my K10 when I first got it, but once it was dialed in, it was great.
I haven't really used it much for paid work, but it excels at just playing around, like here, with the kid in 2014.

As a note, when I went through some of my photos, most of my favorites were shot with the following lenses (in no particular order):
A 50mm f1.4
FA 28-105 f4-5.6
DA* 16-50
Tokina 20-35
And you know, Ricoh just announced a new 16-50 f2.8 if Adam can't find an old one to give away...
