Difficult Run Cascades
Posted By: MRRiley, 11-12-2008, 06:07 PM

Took a run over to Difficult Run on the Virginia side of Great Falls National Park this evening after work. It was the perfect evening for long exposures. Very cloudy and was even sprinkling a little bit (thank goodness for K10D's weather sealing).

Played around with several compositions and managed not to fall in the river.

K10D and DA 16-45mm f4. 1sec, f13, 16mm, iso100... Also used a Cokin ND8X filter

I'll post more from the shoot as I get them processed.

Mike,
Nice play of shadow and light; the water swirl takes your eyes right along.

I really like both the color and the B&W versions, but the color has the edge due to the subtle tones coming up through the water.

That is truly the kind of work I would like to be doing.

Steve

(BTW...the weather around here as of late is so grim that I don't think I could manage a to do a 1s exposure at f/13 with ISO 100 at high noon! It would be more like 5s!)

Thanks for all of the comments...

Steve, This was shot around 4:30 this afternoon under a heavy overcast. I forgot to add in the description that I was using a Cokin ND8X filter as well (will add that info to the first post). I did other exposures in different compos at up to 8 seconds. I'll post some of those shortly.

Nice work Mike. I think i prefer the color version. The color is very minimal due to the season and the weather but that bit of contrast with the leaves makes it pop.

Was this anywhere near the kayaking event?

Both versions are really nice, Mike... Tough to pick one over the other.

Yeah Mel... just up the road on a stream that leads to the Potomac. Nice little stream.
