B&W conversion.
Posted By: JonPB, 11-12-2008, 07:40 PM

Decided to try this image for a B&W conversion. Adjusted the white balance and tint to achieve the most color separation in my subjects, then adjusted the greyscale mix to put everything together. I have taken a liking to it, but then I might be overly influenced by Lee Friedlander's landscapes and I have been staring at my screen for a while.

A50/1.7 @ 1.7, 1/6s, ISO 1600.

Bigger version.

Gallery page.

Criticism very welcome.

I'm still inexperienced when it comes to B&W conversions but I think the contrast could be better.

Thanks, Gary. I think you're right; it is a bit too gray. My idea was to keep the bark's texture in the shadows, and to not blow out the leaves, but that makes the image less black and white and more gray. Now I can look at B&W pictures and try to figure out how a pleasing contrast is achieved while maintaining details.

I chose this image to convert because I liked the subjects but the color was quite bland. I still think the B&W is a step up, but it just goes to show that you get out what you put in.
