My brain is having a hard time connecting the overcast sky with the well lit ground.. What's going on there?

It is really a stunning -and oppressive- shot. I wonder how you did this, though? Which kind of lens? Why I have the feeling you were much closer to the clouds rather than the ground when this was taken?
