An old sunset shot
Lens: Porst Weitwinkel 35mm f/2.8 Camera: K-7
Posted By: Serkevan, 12-16-2020, 06:32 PM

Rummaging through the old folders I found this shot taken about a year and a half ago.
I didn't particularly like the Porst 35mm so I sold it, but the color of the sky here makes me want to reconsider... SOOC JPG, as well .

An oldie but a goody. Even less than stellar lenses can perform now and then. The only question is whether you'll use them enough to catch those moments and not get utterly frustrated all the times they let you down.

Like my DAL 55-300 that would occasionally produce some lovely shots all the while auto focusing like a Mack Truck laboring uphill... just as loud too.

Lovely photo Serkevan... hope you can find another clean copy of that lens.

Nice composition — silhouette of statues provides interest too!

Yeah, that was the main thing - I sold the lens when I still used the K-7 and the Tamron 17-50/2.8 was better than the Porst in more or less any respect. Might have been better on the K-1 (like a ridiculously large, 1 kg+ Tokina 70-210/3.5 that had lovely bokeh but was *very* unwieldy), but oh well.

This shot came out very good. The silhouettes of the statues and lamp posts are very interesting against the colorful sky.

Great picture, and Porst Weitwinkel would be a fabulous name for the open-minded progressive mayor of a quaint old-fashioned village

Nice sky.
The problem with many vintage lenses is: you have to know when to use them to exploit their strenghts, or to use their weaknesses and flaws to your advantage, and to have the foresight to have them with you when you come accross a fitting subject or scene.

The foreground is a bit too dark for my tastes, but the sunset itself is stunning!

Thank you all! I also think the silhouettes help give the image a lot of punch

Yeah, I left the JPG straight out of camera and the result of spot metering the sky is lots of black . If anything, I'd crop the bottom a bit to make it a bit less dark in general.

Love the colours, and not everything needs to have detail in the foreground. Sometimes silhouettes work better.
