Cold Birds
Lens: Pentax DA 55-300 PLM + 1.4X TC Camera: Pentax KP ISO: 8800 Shutter Speed: 1/750s Aperture: F9.5
Posted By: reh321, 12-25-2020, 07:56 AM

When I got up this morning, I discovered that we are going to have a White Christmas afterall.

The male Cardinal caught my eye because of how he stands out against the snow.
After I had grabbed my camera, I also discovered the Mourning Doves huddled together near the squirrel feeder.

Thank you for both of your comments,

I suspect my parents didn't appreciate the view when they lived here - but they didn't 'bribe' the animals as thoroughly.
And - yes - the 55-300mm lens + TC and the 24 bits provided by the KP allow me to record them, which allows me to share them with others.

Are you happy with the KP up to now?

We get female cardinals and some small winter birds. The morning doves chase all the small birds away.

Thank you for your comment.

In our yard, the Mourning Doves are much more subservient.
The Sparrows take over the place, and the Doves just fit where they will.

Thank you for your comment.

We can get wind off the really Great Lake just North of us,
so, yes, Wintery conditions can come upon us very quickly, depending on wind direction.
Local weather forecasters had warned us a week ago that this might happen,
but even they are never really certain.

Being a little critical, it looks like your images could stand to be a little sharper. Even if you are using anti-shake, if you are hand holding you might want to up the ISO.

The Cardinals color just pops from it's wintery environment. Beautiful photo.

Thank you for commenting.

The photo was taken at 'TAv' mode with a shutter speed of 1/750 - so the 'issue' most certainly was not ISO, and I really doubt if it was shutter speed.
If the photo was not as sharp as you would prefer, it most likely was a result of shooting through the glass door.

There is a good reason why the {male} Cardinal is the state bird for all the states around here - we all have Winters like this.

I see some cardinals up here too. I'm always amazed how they come out just as the weather turns cold. That one looks like it fed well before the winter.

Thank you for your comment,

I think it is possible that we just don't see the Cardinals until the trees lose their leaves.
Birds fluff up their weather in cold weather for insulation, so it may not be as well-fed as its looks.
