The Heart of a Snowflake
Posted By: fwwidall, 01-30-2021, 04:21 PM

Here is a crop from one of the snowflake images I posted recently.

If my calculations are correct the central hexagon is approx, 165 micros (0.165mm) across.

The beauty, and complexity, of these incredible tiny structures never fails to amaze and delight me.

Shot with a Nikon 10X microscope objective with 150mm bellows extension on a K3. I paid US$42 for the lens on Ebay (including shipping!) - seems like a real bargain to me.

Please take a look at this thread I posted in December. It has some images of my setup.

Thank you. That's amazing. You set it up outdoors?

Yes, outside in an unheated garage. There's no point in trying to shoot them unless the temperature is -5C or colder. They sublimate so fast that you can see them disappearing through the viewfinder.

Ideal conditions are a nice calm, windless day with the temperatures below -10C. That's when I get the best undamaged, symmetrical crystals. The conditions up in the clouds (humidity, temperature, wind) determine the size and shape of the crystals coming down.

Wow, amazing!

A fantastic image at the micron level -- art and science, combined.
