Snow Crystal - Perfection in Miniature
Lens: Nikon 10X Camera: K3
Posted By: fwwidall, 02-06-2021, 10:11 AM

I shot this little beauty this morning. It was a chilly -11C and the wind was blowing, but this crystal seems to have avoided any collisions on its journey.

I shot it with my inexpensive Nikon 10X microscope objective, mounted on a Pentax Auto Bellows with 150mm extension and attached to my K3.

The crystal is approx 0.70mm across. Not sure how I managed to get the rainbow effect in the centre, presumably a CA artifact, but I like it.

Please check out my Snowflake album on Flickr if you'd like to see more images.

Thanks Ash,

I'm guessing you don't see many of these out there in beautiful Queensland. Can I send you some - I've got lots to spare

Here's an unusually shaped one from yesterday. Tiny little thing about 1mm across.

Thanks for the kind comment.

I've just uploaded a 5 minute snowflake slideshow to Youtube if anyone interested in seeing more of my snowflake images.

Enjoy

The second image is fascinating too! They do get frost in Toowoomba in Queensland. Sometimes.

Thanks Rob,

This morning I awoke to a two foot snowdrift outside my front door, and a wind chill of -16C. I'm sure you can understand why I much prefer photographing snow as opposed to shoveling it

As it happens, when I left home this morning, there had been a light shower of rain and it was +16C. The coldest temperature ever recorded in Canberra was -10C in 1971 and it very seldom gets much below zero these days. Canberra has probably the coldest winter temperatures of any capital city in Australia despite it being a lot further north than Hobart (although over the whole year, Hobart is cooler because Canberra gets very hot in summer).

The coldest temperature I experienced in Canada was a mere -5C in Banff, but I'd been warned about the risk of -30C.

Your work brings out the beauty of snowflakes. Really enjoyed the video showing the diversity of snowflakes shaped and detail. Wonderful work.

Thanks Mike for the kind comment. They never fail to amaze and delight me no matter how many times I shoot them, and I love having the opportunity to share their beauty.
