It's my favourite Alvis... a 1939 Open Tourer.

A very nice car.

My uncle, who was a Civil Engineer and Major in the Canadian Army during and after WW2, spent some time in England , attending a British military college (can't recall the name) somewhere between 1949-52 or so . While in England attending the college, he bought and drove a used Triumph Roadster, I recall him telling me.

Apparently only 15 cars were made like this one... now it is 1 of the 7 remaining.

Hand built by the sounds of it. I'm wondering if it was an engine and chassis delivered to a coachbuilder back when it first was made.

Reading your post, reminded me of a car I saw about 2 decades ago at a car show in my fair burg.

It was the summer and a man showed up in an old open Bentley, from about the late '20's/early '30's. It was a driver quality, not a pristine show car. What was amazing was that it had B.C. plates and he had driven it all the way from Vancouver Island, BC to Manitoba which is about 1800 miles of driving, and over the Rockies and across the hot, unforgiving prairies.

He made it without any difficulty. I was taken by the trip he had made in it and also by the car as it reminded me of John Steed's Blower Bentley, that he used in the TV series, The Avengers. Great show, particularly of the Miss Diana Rigg and Patrick MacNee years.

Absolutely... that's exactly what happened, in the particular case the coachbuilder was Mulliners Limited of Birmingham.

Ah, the nostalgia of it all! Great pic, Kerrowdown.

Reminds me of my first car, which I bought around 1965 - it was a 1948 Wolseley - no idea of the model. Bucket front seats, you sat very high in the back seat, polished wooden dash.

Is there a new "Alvis" company, building to order, a so-called "continuation" series? Or has it fallen by the wayside?

I'm not sure...

Wasn't gonna sign up just in case they thought I was Royalty... as no doubt these would cost a King's ransom.
