Thanks.

The island is man made... there's much more of it now submerged, as the Loch level has risen so much over the last 400 years or so.

Beautiful photo.

History is intriguing. Man made island...at least 400 years old. Who built it, why and so long ago, how was it built ?

I've been to Loch Ness a number of times over the years and although I'm no expert on this fascinating body of water (history, size, ?, etc.) I've always thought it was mainly quite deep, although I'm sure that as in many lochs, lakes, there are shallower areas....where a man made island could be made.

Sorry for all the questions.

Cherry Island or as it's more correctly known Eilean Muireach, (Murdoch's Island)... would appear to be actually much older than Medieval times I mentioned.

It's actually a late prehistoric dwelling constructed upon an artificial island which includes the submerged remains of a medieval castle, known to have existed on the site in the 15th century. It's situated in a rare shallow area near to the West shore. Although it is now relatively small now, it would have originally been circular and about 80 metres in diameter. The construction consists of an extensive platform of oak beams, fastened together and edged by tree trunks, this had then been overlain by a mound of rubble and larger stone. There are also traces of a causeway also now submerged, running from the North West corner towards the nearby shore. On the South East corner of the island, there is a submerged ridge of stones forming a breakwater.

Hope this we extra bit of info helps to satisfy your curiosity.

You're most welcome, I was already aware of the Medieval part... but didn't realise the site had been "recycled" from an existing prehistoric dwelling.

Have you been to this location during low water? Does it become a Cherry Peninsula?

Loch Ness is a freshwater Loch and therefore not tidal, but it does go up and down a few feet at certain times of the year with excessive rain or snow melt.

There are traces of a causeway but that's always fully submerged, it runs from the North West corner towards the nearby shore.
