Breakfast on the Lawn
Lens: Sigma 150-500 Camera: K3 Photo Location: Back garden ISO: 2000 Shutter Speed: 1/200s Aperture: F6.3
Posted By: crossed-up, 03-02-2021, 05:10 PM

I was met by this somewhat gruesome site as I looked out of my office window over the garden this morning. The K3 was out on the desk and very fortuitously mounted with the 150-500 on rather than the 16-50 as normal.

K3 and Sigma 150-500 @ 400mm, ISO2000, 1/200, F6.3.

Thats an unusual color for a hawk. He looks green. Greenish tint I mean. Never saw this before.

Nature doing what it does best, great shots. I like the last one, looks as if he/she is looking right at you saying 'Don't even think about it.'

Some great shots! Any idea what the victim was? It looks almost as big as the hawk.

This is a juvenile Northern Goshawk. It still has a few brownish bars left in its upperpart feathers. Its eyes will eventually turn blood red with age. Looks like some kind of pigeon had a bad luck day.

To the OP. Great shot. Usually all I see from my resident Cooper’s hawk is a circle of feathers on the snow

I think it is the influence of light reflecting off the grass. I shoot birds a lot and get a lot of color distortion due to foliage

The hawk is about twice the size of a pigeon

Excellent series of images! It is just an everyday occurrence for these predators, at least the hawks hope that it is...

Thanks for all the comments, it really was one of those times when I just happened to have the right camera with the most suitable lens to hand; I'll admit I fired off the first two shots without a card in the camera though It was shot from an upstairs window, but far enough away that the angle wasn't too steep to get a head on shot. The Sigma is usually in its case under the bench and any previous opportunity has usually passed by the time I've unpacked and got it mounted, and if the subject is still there after that, opening the window usually scares them off!

Thanks to jbimpg on the goshawk ID, I was still trying to determine what it was based on the white eyebrows.

To answer some of the questions:

I think the green cast is reflected from the grass, like Lowell Goudge say.

The victims was one of the particularly well fed pigeons that frequent the garden and was actually about the same size as the hawk.

I'm still waiting to get a decent shot of one of the increasing number of red kites that are around here.

Keep that lens on, and the card in!

Ho Ho!!!!! I have taken some of my best shots without a card in my KP!!! 'Course, I can't prove that - no card, no pic!!!!

In most of my "Oh no, no Card!!" moments, the opportunity was totally lost, but you obviously recovered quickly enough to get some great shots here - well done!
