Orange Tailed Cedar Waxwing
Posted By: Larrymc, 03-12-2021, 07:01 PM

The little guy in the bottom right of the frame caught my eye after I downloaded the image with its orange tail feather tips. This is not a normal color variation—it's actually caused by consuming the fruit of an introduced honeysuckle species, which results in cedar waxwings growing orange-tipped tail feathers.

I'm a bit late to this party, but let me add my accolades - a very nice image of a group of very cute little birds!

I looked up the orange tipped tail, according to Sibley guide it presumes diet related, but I fail to see how in a flock, only one has the orange tip

P.s I’ve missed your BIF shots, have you stopped using that technique or just waiting for spring?
I know it's a long time later, but I think I know why this happens. These birds are territorial at certain times of the year and will drive other birds away from their territory at those times. This can give them exclusive access to the particular plant food source that causes the colour change.
