I like these much better. The first is soft and ethereal and well balanced. The second, though not as saturated in colour, is nevertheless colorful and will print much better.

I have found, few images look better when dark. I guess it depends on the scene. I will give you a tip: If you have a dark image to start, lighten it before you duplicate the image and the results of blending will not be so dark. Also try to find good composition with ordinary flat or dull light and givem a try. I did put one more example in the my Magic of Winter example.
