Amazing photos!! I see they were shot with a 600mm lens. How far away were you? I think I would have freaked out had I stumbled on that.

Thanks. Around 18ft. I was stood motionless waiting for them to show.

Wow! I guess you knew they were there already if you were waiting for them to emerge, presumably from winter hybernation?
I have seen them in the garden a few times but rarely when I have the camera handy. A couple of years ago I found one in the compost bin together with my tribe of slow worms. I did have my camera with me then as I was looking for the slow worms but the grass snake was quicker than a DPR bicycle so I missed focus.
