These birds are reasonably common in Hong Kong but it has taken me four plus years to get a decent photo of one:

Lovely capture. Look at those tail feathers! Very different to our Aussie magpies.

Brisboy, all of what you said is what I thought I would say when I looked at this excellent image in the Post forum - then I get here and you have already said it!!

Whatever - great capture, fascinating tail feathers, so different to our Aussie black and white magpie!!!!

Very nice capture of a really impressive looking bird. I would love to see this bird in flight with those long tail feathers.

Thanks for the comments!

I saw one of these less than a month after I arrived in Hong Kong (late 2016) and, naturally, didn't have the right lens on my camera so all I got was a blurry, blue smudge. I'll be leaving HK in about two months so I was running out of time to see (and photograph!) one before I leave. I took my camera with me to the vaccination center on Tuesday (to get my second jab!) as I thought the nearby park looked like a good candidate for some bird activity. Lucky me!

Your Magpie is so much more colourful than the one in the UK! I tried to get a photo of a UK magpie, but didn't succeed. They usually disappeared loudly on sight. Great photo!

We have Oriental magpies here as well and they are black and white and look more or less like magpies I've seen in other parts of the world. They are raucous and entertaining but not nearly as pretty as the blue ones. My wife was lucky enough to see some azure-winged magpies here recently but she's not a photographer...

Nice! The Australian "magpie" isn't related to the European magpie or the Oriental one at all. As far as I know, it acquired its name purely because it's black and white (although we also have Magpie-Larks, Currawongs, Butcherbirds, Choughs and others which are black and white!).
