In part yes the river mist was diffusing the detail somewhat in of the background, however this was also an artistic choice with applying DoF and distance to subject / distance to background considerations. to enhance the effect.

Thank you. Indeed, not every landscape image needs to be clinically sharp front to back. In fact I find that those images more often than not lack soul and that little something that stirs emotion within the viewer, at least for me anyways.
My argument on this is my eye doesn't see the periphery of vision tack sharp, only what i'm focussing on, and this is something I like to try an convey in a good proportion of images I take and make. So I'm pleased to read this little video/example has gone some way to bringing that thought back to you too.
