Exactly ! My son-in-law is Ukrainian. His grandmother fled the "Stalin famine" and found refuge in Canada. His grandfather passed away in a Siberian camp. I knew and appreciated very well his parents who were both Ukrainians. I learned about their culture and mostly, their eating habits. His father once told me "Chto lat !", I think it means "Live to be 100". When I visited them, he often offered me a glass of spirits, saying "We will never see each other this young ever again, let's drink to that !" He was an adorable man.
Regards
