I was out at sea in a RIB with other photographers, looking for whales, and taking shots of the stupendous cliffs in this area. There were a number of shearwaters around, something of a feeding frenzy. We were relatively stationary, drifting slowly when the shearwater swarm engulfed us. Those with their cameras on auto-focus, including me, had a camera that was overwhelmed - so, just keep shooting, something will work out. Here is the result - one from a bird maestrom, another when the swarm decided to take a break

Very chaotic - I prefer the second image, the cliffs in the distance bring a sense of scale, and you see splashing going on. What a spectacle - you were lucky to be a part of it.

It was memorable. I will probably post a couple more from this trip. These birds are migratory - breed in Tasmania, and then head north to Alaska and Kamchatka. The chicks are harvested by our indigenous people, and are known as mutton birds. Tried it once - truly awful.

Holy cow. I agree, I like the second more, especially the background. Gives a sense of scale
