Rock eye

There's probably a name for these little round pool in tidal rock shelves. This one from near my home was one of the nicest I've seen. Challenge is to stand directly over but avoiding adding my shadow, and being alert to the ocasional larger wave heading my way.

It's a hole in the rock shelf, presumably the result of tidal flows, and a bunch of molluscs calls it home. It's about 4 inches deep, 8 inches across. It and retains the water when the tide recedes. The dark centre, the 'pupil' is a small bit of seaweed firmly attached to the rock.

Thanks. I found this when I decided to photograph all the little boat sheds around our village. There are big sandstone rock shelves between the beaches, and wave action has led to interesting shapes and patterns.

Unless I find a technical name I think chameleon eye will suffice - thanks for the idea

It appears to be some sort of pot hole that formed in or around an ancient stream bed before the sediment was indurated in to what appears to be sandstone. It may have been formed by a small boulder that fell off a cliff into the stream. The pot hole appears to be near or within an intertidal zone close to a beach, as I see barnacles, pelecypods (oyster shells) and maybe a brown sponge of some sort near the center. What's odd are the radial fractures emanating from the center. It may have been a hardened mud at the time the boulder struck it, resulting in these stress fractures. Perhaps you can find a local geologist who might be able to "dig" deeper into this interesting anomaly.
