This is how giraffes fight
Lens: Pentax DA 300mm F4 ED(IF) SDM Camera: K1 Photo Location: Pilanesberg, South Africa ISO: 200 Shutter Speed: 1/640s Aperture: F8

Two giraffes bulls sparring over territory and/or mating rights, The movements appear slow and graceful, almost like dancing, until contact is made with tremendous force.
A filmaker was killed several years ago when he went too close to a "tame" giraffe, which took a swing at him with its head.

amazing set of frames. These gentle giants can be dangerous if messed with. It is almost comical to see a giant like this try to drink water from a pond, Evolution bestowed them with a long appendages to reach far but drinking water, well that's another matter. Thanks for sharing such beautiful moments of these enigmatic animals.

Wonderful shot, Dennis! These critters are so tall, I forget they're big, heavy and strong.

A 2000 pound animal could kill you just thinking it was gently pushing you out of the way. They look so graceful and peaceful, it would be easy to be lulled into a sense of safety. The shots are quite incredible.

It is very awkward and ungainly for giraffes to drink, as well as making them extremely vulnerable to predators whilst they are drinking. Given their large size, giraffes need a lot of water. I love the aerial view of the drinking giraffe which you linked.

Your comment here reminds me of a movie I saw a long time ago in which there was a segment where various animals had gorged themselves on over-ripe fermented fruit, and they all became intoxicated - monkeys, elephants, and yes - a giraffe. The movie was called "Animals are Beautiful People".

Catch the "drunken menagerie" here:

Here is a shot of a giraffe lifting its head just after drinking. Not a particulalry great photo, but serves to show how ungainly and vulnerable they are when getting down to drink.

Thanks. This is an old movie by Jamie Uys. I also watched it many years ago and the scenes of animals having eaten fermented marula fruit are hilarious.
