View of Half-Dome near the end of the day, when the light becomes warmer. K5 + DA 55-300 mm @ 55 mm FL and f/9. Even with 75 deg F days in July, nights dip to 34 deg F (near freezing) in high altitude campgrounds.

It is an outcropping that was cut and fashioned by glaciers during the last Ice Age 12 000 years ago.

Some alpinists try to climb these rock fascias every year. Some have perished over the years. The fir trees you see measure at least 70 feet (20 m) in height !
