I've been working with this shot for some time because of difficult sunny conditions. May have it right finally.

I think so, great capture. I think at least several of the hummers in a special enclosure at our botanical garden were Anna's, tiny creatures, almost always in motion.

My K-70 and a DA* 300mm. The problem is a dark subject and a light sky. I always have trouble with high contrast images.

That makes sense. Our feeder is under a tree so I usually have the opposite problem

That is a great photo! I wish I had one like that. I have one possible suggestion: I am not sure what you are using in post production, but if it is Lightroom or something similar, I would try to adjust the shade slider so a bit more detail becomes visible in the darkest areas without overexposing the light areas. It might work. it might not, but if you can try it, it is worth a shot.
