A battle scarred hippo bull has retreated to recover alone
Lens: Pentax DA 300mm F4 ED(IF) SDM Camera: K1 Photo Location: Pilanesberg, South Africa ISO: 400 Shutter Speed: 1/500s Aperture: F6.3

This hippo was living alone in a small remote dam when we saw him, far from others of his kind. I wonder how much force it takes to break a hippo's canine? If you look carefully, the lower canine lies at a very unusual angle, no doubt the result of a vicious contest with another bull hippo, which this fella probably lost because he is by himself.
It is said that hippos are responsible for the deaths of more people in Africa than by crocodiles. Notwithstanding that hippos are herbivores, they are territorial and protective, often grumpy and can be extremely dangerous and aggressive.

Fantastic capture Dennis! Just looking at how he is holding open his mouth, it must be very painful.

Nature can be brutal. What is the expected prognosis here, eating would be problematic so could this be fatal?
