During the resistance to the Indonesian invasion of East Timor, a key moment in swinging world opinion against the Indonesians was a massacre at a cemetery in Dili on November 12, 1991. Film of this appalling event was smuggled out and broadcast widely.
Each year on November 12 Timorese light candles in the streets 'to guide the souls home'
