Today the Australian War Memorial had an open day with flypasts etc - it made for some good photo ops:

These photos are great!

The guy with the pipe certainly has his attitude there.

I particularly like the shot with the flag on the left and plane on the right!

The mate with the pipe remindes me of some RAAF members that I spent time with at Townsville and the RAAF base there. I was berthed in the Sargents quarters with them and what a class act that experience was! Every evening we would dine together, then have our tea and smokes out on the veranda while talking politics. At the time I was in my mid 20's and these quys were in their 40's to 60's. Oh yes, they also taught me how to lose at Snooker!!

I am sorry.. but thats incorrect.

The correct designation is P51D Mustang. The P47 was the Thunderbolt and what you have there is a Mustang. Probably the finest of all American designed fighter planes in WWII.

Nice Shots though!

Quite correct. Just testing your powers of observation.

Great shots! 4 and 5 are my favorites, and the indoor shots are really nice. Those are sometimes the hardest to get right.

The indoor shots

were lit quite unusually with various coloured spotlights so the balance of each shot had to be tweaked on conversion.

But hats off to shake reduction - the indoor shots were between 1/15 and 1/4.

I like the pipe smoker too - it was still smokin' away when I left three hours later

Thanks everyone

Thanks Pat and everyone. Indeed it is a P51 - The RAAF was still using them as late as the Korean war before they were replaced by the Meteor and then the fabulous little Sabre. (After that the Mirage then the FA18)

Thanks for posting, love the pipe smoker, but my fave is the shot over the shoulder of the sailor. Nice composition.

Thanks Salty and Clarence. I think the insignia shot worked OK...the sailor is looking down Anzac parade and over the lake you can just make out Parliament House.
