My First Texas Hummingbird Photo
Posted By: ToddK, 05-30-2021, 03:25 PM

since moving here last fall. I believe this is a female Ruby Throated Hummingbird which are in this area in the summer. They have been feeding on the salvia in my front yard, and today I was waiting for them. This was taken from about 7-8 feet away and cropped just a little.

I'm envious! I have yet to get my first hummingbird shot. I even set out a HB feeder this year. Ain't seen nary a one yet, and I know they're around. I'll just have to enjoy great shots like yours for the time being.

Thanks Apet-Sure! Just stick with it and you will get them. However, make sure you keep it fresh. I had year-round hummingbirds at my feeders in Northern California for over 20 years. I cleaned the feeders and changed the liquid every week. Also, no need to buy the hummingbird food. Just dissolve 1/4 cup of sugar per cup of water and you are good to go.

My feeder needs to be changed now. Hummingbirds don't seem to like vinegar.. Nice shot. I like photos of hummingbirds feeding on flowers.

Good to know. My liquid has been in there for weeks! I guess hummingbirds don't like stale sugar. Curiously, the ants aren't bothering it either. I'll try switching from store-bought to home brew.
