Eagle Chasing an Osprey
Lens: Pentax DA 300 Camera: K-3 III Photo Location: Dogtown Lake, AZ
Posted By: phx.david, 06-14-2021, 01:17 PM

So I was focused in on an eagle in a tree waiting for it to take off. I hear a splash and see an osprey pulling up. I start taking some shots of the osprey with the fish when I hear the eagle take off. I move back to the eagle and start taking some shots. I realize the eagle is chasing the osprey and I manage to get a few decent shots. The osprey does make its escape and keeps its fish. The eagle moves back to another tree and shrieked its displeasure for a few minutes. When I get back to my trailer later and load the card, I realize I had left the shutter at 1/400 that I was using to get the eagle in the tree. I'm lucky I had any decent shots. Next trip, I'm going to be playing with the automatic settings more. Not the greatest shots, but entertaining.

You have documented a very interesting encounter. You are fortunate to be there at the right time and got some unique captures. The photos are actually quite good. Thanks for posting.

Great series! In the right place at the right time you lucky dog. You could set up a user mode on your camera called 'Eagle chasing Osprey'. That way you'll be ready next time!

Wouldn't that guarantee I'd never get the chance at the shot again?

Rare to actually capture that encounter. I always use Tav mode with a shutter speed 1/1000 or faster if I can when trying to photograph wildlife. either moving or still. There are so many very quick subtle movements take can get blurred away even with wildlife that appear to be perfectly still.

I used Tav mode, but I wanted to drop the ISO and use a small aperture while the eagle was in the tree. I've learned my lesson. Have another trip up there planned in July, won't be using anything slower than 1/1000.
