My Sharpest (700mm) Tele Shots!
Posted By: Adam, 03-10-2007, 07:15 PM

My new 1.4x-L teleconverter came in today, so I decided to give it a test run right away. The only compatible lens I have is the K 500mm...

This converter, coupled with the lens, proved to produce one of my sharpest lens combinations ever! I used the resulting 700mm F6.3 mostly around F13.5, and here are the results:

I took a few tests photos of my neighbor's TV antenna from my back yard first, and then I went out to the take and took bird photos from a nice distance.

You can't see the screws and cables pictured below with the naked eye (about 150 feet away), but the most impressive part here would have to be the sharpness- and that's with the teleconverter! The photos below will speak for themselves- they just go to prove that Pentax did manufacture (all) quality products in the old days...

I set up my tripod about 200 feet away from the ducks and 500 feet away from the heron.

Thanks, guys! I'll definitely be having lots of fun with this combo. The only bad thing would have to be the aberration- it's present in almost every photo

It's an SMC Pentax teleconverter, and as such you should immediately expect good quality. The L stands for "Long," meaning that the converter only works with certain extreme-telephoto lenses. In turn, it's sharper than an "S" converter would be on these lenses.

Here's why:

Wow, you could get that tele! Bhphoto only has 2X L teleconverter on order...

Where did you get this tele, Adam? The images are stunning. Besides the rich blue, the sharpness is razor like piercing.

I want one!

I got the converter from ShadZee (here on the site), but there's also one from Adorama on eBay right now. I think it would work great with your 300mm!

i've shot mine with the 1.4x-s with the same results. i can find no image degradation. in fact i have a feeling this is a combo i'll use very often.
adam, i've also read that this lens's best IQ is at f16. i have not tested it tho.
i've also shot using a tamron 2x with VERY acceptable results.
