Amongst surfers this is a famous beach, but they weren't coming on this morning when the sea was rather flat and a sea mist gave most things a soft focus.
If you want to go to Martha Lavinia beach it's a long haul to this remote spot - get to King Island in Bass Strait, halfway between Tasmania and the Australian mainland, and head out to the lonely north-eastern shore. The name derives from the 52-ton schooner Martha Lavinia, wrecked on a reef offshore in 1871 near what is the site of the state reserve while carrying a cargo of potatoes from Tasmania to Adelaide. King Island is surrounded by shipwreck sites.
More recently, Martha Lavinia came into the news when it was learned that a salmon farming company wanted to install salmon feedlots in this region.
And the subject? My son, also a keen photographer but regrettably went down the Sony pathway.
