I prefer the top shot - the colourful sand makes for a more intriguing photo.

Thanks. I thought eyes get drawn towards the sand rather than the whole view.

Me too. I think the scenery is a bit flat (yet still quite nice) without something on the foreground, especially with a wide angle lens.

For me, it warms up the image, and gives an anchor to start the viewer's eyes, and then it follows the triangle shape of the reflection in the water into the distance. Otherwise you're not sure if you are standing in the water or where you are.
With it, the image doesn't feel as if you're capturing the fact of the water and slopes; it adds something to it.

Wow, thanks. I am not a pro and never put in this much thought into this photo. We had only few minutes at this stop, it was slightly drizzling, took some pictures with the family and let them go on the trail around the lake while I enjoyed few private moments with my K3+18-135 trusting its WR capabilities.
