Frisky Dragonflies
Lens: F*300 + 1.4 converter

Was walking near a swampy lake today in the hope of finding some pretty birds when this concoction whirred past. Unfortunately, my settings were way off, so had to pull up the exposure too much in post. So it's not one for the pixel peepers. Still find it quite interesting. I guess they're mating, unless this is some weird Dragonfly disco dance, anyone remember the "Locomotion"

It’s a nice capture. I don’t mind the noise. They’re mating... very nice color palette.

Certainly acrobatic. A bit like the old "standing up in a canoe" joke.

I also wonder why they keep flying

I guess that would be how they did their thing. Nice job, not all shots are planned, at least it's in focus!

Excellent capture! Not unusual for the dragonflies, but not often captured with a photograph.

I like taking pictures of dragonflies and damselflies alone and mating, and I've caught a few singly on the wing with limited success, but catching a mating pair clearly while they're in the air is amazing! Great job, forget about the bit of noise. You caught something very difficult to catch and it provides an awesome glimpse into how they behave.

I could be wrong but as far as I know they do this because it lessens the chance of them being eaten by something larger while they're distracted with each other. Personally I think just trying to fly like they do would be infinitely challenging. Successfully mating while flying and remaining aware of threats is impressive. We don't give critters enough credit.

I wonder if they have to learn to compensate for injuries like that lost chunk of wing, on the right? Before they starve. It would change their aerodynamics, and they have to be so precise to nab prey.

very good capture of this scene not often seen - I have hardly ever photographed one in the air at all - I guess these were distracted.
