The AFC seems improved to me.

Good test shots. The noise is not too bad at ISO 6400 either.

👍 Both photos look good. Noise is minimal.

Those are really good - I've snapped a lot of aircraft, and gave up on AFC on my K1 for it.

Thanks Todd! I would normally have reduced the noise in the sky in post, but I wanted to leave this as it was.

I'm really impressed with the usability of images from the K3iii at 6400 ISO. I'm changing my upper limit on Auto ISO to 12800.

Thanks! There's a little bit of motion blur but I'm certain that it's me tracking the plane not the camera failing to do so. I also want to try the "horizontal AFC" mode with planes because it should be exactly appropriate.

That K3iii with the 55-300 really is a superb combination.
Makes me want to get the K3iii; as ProfessorBuzz pointed out the K1 can't track focus like that. (But it's outstanding for nature photography!)
Thanks for leaving the noise in the image--glad to see that.
Angky.

You're welcome! The noise is only really noticeable in the blue sky, not the aircraft. I'll get to try the new firmware on the weekend with the DFA 150-450, which is my favourite lens. The 55-300 PLM is amazing for such a light and compact lens. I tried photographing a passing plane earlier today with a really big AF area activated, and the AFC still tracked the plane without being distracted. I'm hoping that the performance with birds and animals will also be improved.
