It's goat food!
When I was a kid, my mom's goats loved those thistle blossoms; but they sure looked funny trying to wrap their tongue around them without getting poked.

If you are interested in insect photography, they attract butterflies and bees.

Yep. Pretty sure that's Scotch thistle. Nasty things. But Todd's right. Pollinators love 'em.

Wow! thanks everybody! I had thistle in mind, but also wondered if it was the milkweed that monarchs like but that turned out to have a different flower.
