A Gang-gang Pair
Lens: DFA 150-450 Camera: K3iii Photo Location: Canberra, Australia ISO: 6400 Shutter Speed: 1/1250s Aperture: F5.6

This pair of Gang-gang Cockatoos were clearly feeling Spring in the air. I hope they succeed in bringing more little Gang-gangs into the world, because after the fires, they are even more endangered.

Beautiful birds. Great capture. Hope that species like these can be sustained.

Nice catch in full fine-feathered detail! The wing feathers have sharp-edged definition.
Why is his face so red? He sure is looking at us as if he has something he wants to say!
Angky.

Nice shot - again! I had not considered how badly birds like the Gang-gang might have suffered. Survival rates among the young should be high though if there is enough to feed them. (I still think the K-3iii pics have "something" that makes then stand out.)

Thanks! Maybe he was annoyed that I was disturbing his private time with his lady.

Thanks! Being able to take high ISO in poor light helps a lot. I think we need to better understand what habitat they depend on. I think they need casuarinas, which are generally cleared off private land.

Thank you! I was fascinated to see a hint of green in his wings.

Yes, and no noise reduction in post processing. The K3iii is awesome.
I'd be even happier if DxO would release a module for the K3iii.

The Gang-gang can be seen relatively easily around Canberra. They seldom stay in one place for long. The only reliable places I have found are the eucalyptus lawn and rock garden at the Australian National Botanic Gardens (the latter location near sunset when they come for a drink). Unfortunately the gardens are closed at the moment. This pair was in Callum Brae, but I haven't seen them since. I often hear them in the early morning near my place on the south side. I've seen them around Mount Taylor, Black Mountain and Farrer Ridge. They are also seen reasonably often in Namadgi National Park, but it is also closed at the moment.

PS There's lots of other parrots which are more common around Canberra; Sulphur-crested Cockatoos, Little Corellas, Galahs, Yellow-tailed Black Cockatoos, Rainbow Lorikeets, Crimson Rosellas, Eastern Rosellas, Red-rumped parrots and Superb Parrots for example.
