Sure!
It all started here in Bellingham. Slum Doctors was a dream of a local Fairhaven College student. He was working on a Arts Therapy and the Community self designed major. Set up a table one day to get ideas and raise consciousness of the troubles Africa is suffering having provided the labor and much of the natural resources to fuel Euro-America's meteoric rise to world dominance and and left in poverty. Poverty and destruction of any health care system.
To help Slum Doctors was born. The Idea was to send medical professionals and students there, provide scholarships for sending promising students from there here. Alex Kajumulo got involved. One of many rising Afro-World Beat stars that deeply remembers their roots and return much to their original community; he also mentors American students in music. There were two there at the show. They played a few of their own songs solo and with the bands accompaniment and then accompanied the band. (Nerves got them off key sometimes and it made for some of the worse sounding best music in the world!)
Small turn out as far as crowds go. That show I shot that inspired all the creepy images a while back was also on a Sunday. Cost twice as much and was over sold out.
Alex points out that we are rich with excuses here.
Thanks for asking Gary.
