We have 6 foot tides in the vicinity of Quebec City. So the rocks become visible at low tides but are submerged at high tides. This was taken around noon, at the lowest level of the tide this particular day. Some ships of the British fleet floundered on these shallow reefs in 1759 when they attacked Quebec. There is a shipping channel south of the island that is maintained by Transport-Canada. The St Lawrence is almost 200 feet deep at the eastern tip of Isle d'Orleans.
