1963 Corvette

This red '63 Corvette was - to my mind - the coolest car in the show I attended on Saturday. The car appears brand new (I even imagined I inhaled some new-car smell ) and has been maintained just as it came off the assembly line in 1963 . . . . . right down to bias ply tires. It's equipped with a 4-speed transmission connected to a 327 CI V-8 making 340 HP, the most powerful carbureted engine available at the time and almost as strong as the top-of-the line fuel-injected version (360 HP). The '63 models were built with the famous split rear window, and I suspect this car is worth a considerable amount of money.

Is this considered to be the sting ray? A real classic and it looks brand new. Nice image.

Thanks, Mike. And yes, according Wikipedia, the '63 was the first Corvette model with the Stingray moniker. To be honest, I'm far from a Corvette expert (the comments on the motors I mentioned in the OP I learned from the car's owner); like a lot of car enthusiasts, I do have a general awareness of the various generations of the 'Vette, and I've test driven a few of 'em over the years. But that's about it.

I do remember seeing my first '63 Corvette. It was a new split window coupe, fuel injected 327, a light brown colour. I was a grade eight student, walking to school with some buddies and this car went by, just at the speed limit, in a very unobtrusive manner. The driver, lived in the neighbourhood, and owned a Chev-Olds dealership in my burg. He always had some exceptional ride, at least for a couple of weeks, to later be sold as a 'demonstrator.'

But I do remember my reaction, I turned in about a 180 degree move....always keeping my eye on this wonderful looking sports car.

I have driven a '64 Corvette, convertible a few times. My boss at the time ('68-69) was from the UK and always had exceptional cars...and I as his loyal underling, had a car worthy of swapping with him, on occasion. I had my '67 Camaro RS coupe, 327, 4 speed.

He had, in succession.....a '67 MGB, a ' 60's Jaguar Mk. ll Saloon with the 3.8, DOHC, inline six and a '64 Corvette.

They were all exceptional sporting cars to drive, but although I like the Vette, my favourite was his Jaguar sedan, with it's Connolly Leather , well stuffed seats, burled walnut dash, etc...white on black Smiths' instruments, excellent handling, etc .

I've never been in a car that got so many looks from people of every age...and as a Jag driver - even temporarily like me- would say.... 'station in life.'

Supremely comfortable, absolutely stunning to look at.

Well, it was all very heady for a 19 year old.

Hey Les - your comments remind me of growing up in a small (19,000) town in rural Illinois (but pretty close to St. Louis). It was - in those days - a prosperous place that produced a local "gentry" (of course), some of which displayed their success with big houses and fleets of high-end cars. Caddys and Lincolns were, unsurprisingly, the staples of this crowd, but a few would include a Jaguar sedan to the fleet, and one guy had a Rolls. Many of these folks kept a Corvette in the garage, and one or two drove an XKE. A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away.
